Last season, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney made some unwanted headlines when he listed Ohio State at No. 11 in his Coaches Poll ballot.
Less than two weeks later, the Buckeyes exacted some revenge when they routed Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal. It looks like the backlash Swinney received led to him making a pretty significant change in his routine this season.
On Tuesday, Swinney admitted he opted out of the Coaches Poll, saying the Ohio State controversy last year was “just a distraction for my team.”
As you might imagine, college football fans, and Ohio State supporters in particular, are having a lot of fun with this admission.

Since Dabo made that fatal error of voting OSU as the 11th best team in the Country (just before they slaughtered his Tigers in the National Semi-Final), Clemson Football has looked mediocre at best. https://t.co/WCj2C5I3a5

Who could have possibly predicted that ranking your CFP opponent no.11 would have dire and distracting consequences https://t.co/UnsJMSU3am

To be fair, Swinney’s second point is a decent one. The Coaches and AP polls only matter so much; ultimately, the College Football Playoff rankings have the largest say in what happens in the postseason.
That won’t stop people from getting these jokes off at his expense though.
