We’re going to get college basketball back eventually, and when we do, ESPN basketball analyst Dick Vitale is going to be ready with his takes.
On Wednesday, Dickie V revealed his early list of favorites in the 2020-21 college basketball season. While Power Five and Big East titans like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Baylor and Villanova all made strong cases, he feels that Gonzaga will be the team to beat next season.
Vitale explained that Gonzaga’s scoring and efficiency this past season was second to none, and he only expects to the team to improve. He also pointed out that WCC Player of the Year Filip Petrusev is currently scheduled to return.
While Gonzaga is set to lose some key contributors to departures and transfers, Vitale feels that their returning starlets and recruiting class should offset the losses. As a result, he feels very comfortable making the Bulldogs his preseason No. 1.
Here are Dick Vitale’s top 5 college basketball teams for the 2020-21 season:
- Gonzaga Bulldogs
- Villanova Wildcats
- Baylor Bears
- Duke Blue Devils
- Kansas Jayhawks
The Bulldogs have made 21 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and would have raised that mark to 22 had the 2020 NCAA Tournament not been canceled. In that span, they’ve made it to the Elite Eight four times, three of which came in the last five years.
While they were close to sealing the deal in 2017, 2021 could be the year they finally get it done.
