Things are going well for the Ottawa Senators so far this season. At the time of this writing, the Senators sport a 13-10-4 record and are just four points behind the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic Division standings.
With the way the Senators have started this season, it is looking likely that they will be buyers again this year. It would be understandable if they went down this route, as they are a promising team on the rise. They also, of course, will be looking to get back into the playoffs for the second in a row.
When looking at the Senators’ roster, it is fair to argue that they could use another impactful forward. One trade candidate who could make a lot of sense for the Senators to pursue because of this is Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood. The Columbus, Ohio native has been the subject of trade rumors this season, and it would be understandable if the Senators were one of the teams that targeted him.
Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade proposal that has the Canucks sending Sherwood to the Senators in a big swap.
Senators Get:
- Kiefer Sherwood
Canucks Get:
- 2027 First-Round Pick (Top 10 Protected)
- 2026 Sixth-Round Pick
Canucks Are Ready to Sell & Sherwood Is Their Top Trade Candidate
The Canucks have had a disastrous start to the 2025-26 season. At the time of this writing, they have a 10-15-3 record and are last in the NHL standings. Because of their struggles, they are ready to do some selling.
Late last month, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Canucks are willing to listen to trade offers for their veteran players.
“According to several sources, the Vancouver Canucks have let it be known that — in an effort to get younger — they are willing to listen to offers on “veteran players,” Friedman wrote.
Due to his pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) status, Sherwood has been talked about heavily in the rumor mill since. The 30-year-old forward’s contract also makes him a very appealing target, as he has an easily affordable $1.5 million cap hit. Thus, he is going to be exactly the kind of player that playoff teams will line up for at the deadline, and the Senators should enter the mix.
Sherwood Would Give Senators’ Forward Group Nice Boost
When looking at the Senators’ lineup, it is clear that they could use a player like Sherwood. This is because he is not only capable of providing solid scoring but also plays a very heavy game. With this, he would be an excellent pickup for Ottawa’s forward group if brought in.
Sherwood could slot very nicely in the Senators’ middle six if acquired, especially when noting that he can play both wings. Furthermore, he would also give them another player who is capable of playing on both the power play and penalty kill.
In 28 games so far this season with the Canucks, Sherwood has posted 12 goals, 16 points, and 119 hits. With numbers like these, he would certainly give Ottawa more secondary scoring if acquired.
