Whether he admits it or not, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is frustrated with his team’s College Football Playoff ranking this week. The Tigers checked in outside the top four at No. 5.
It clearly rubbed Swinney the wrong way. He couldn’t stop talking about it all week.
There’s been plenty of criticism concerning Clemson’s weak schedule. And that was one of the playoff committee’s main reasons for ranking the Tigers where they did.
Unfortunately for the NC State Wolfpack, they were the victim of Clemson’s frustration on Saturday night. The Tigers blew the Wolfpack off the field in a 55-10 blowout victory. From a general fan’s perspective, it looks like a normal blowout win.
But a deeper examination, specifically of the end of the game, shows Clemson may have been running up the score. Swinney decided to run three plays in the final minutes to score a touchdown. The Tigers had no reason to do so as they held a 49-10 lead prior to the final score.
Perhaps the Tigers are trying to score style points to impress the committee as pointed out in the tweet below.
Think being ranked No. 5 in @CFBPlayoff didn’t matter to Dabo? Clemson runs 3 plays in final minute to score late TD instead of taking a knee to run up score in 55-10 win at NC State

Either way, Swinney’s going to have to face a few more difficult questions in media sessions this week.
But as long as the Tigers keep winning, the committee will have no reason to leave them out of the playoff.
