An already-impressive offseason for North Carolina just got even better. The Tar Heels have landed five-star junior GG Jackson.
Jackson, the No. 5 overall prospect in the 2023 class according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, announced his commitment to UNC moments ago. The 6-foot-9 power forward is the second five-star commit for the Heels in the 2023 cycle, joining combo guard Simeon Wilcher.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, some coaches have said they could see Jackson winding up as the No. 1 overall player in his class. It will be tough to overtake scintillating guard D.J. Wagner, the current No. 1 prospect, but needless to say, Jackson has plenty of game.
Elite junior GG Jackson has committed to North Carolina. Huge pickup for Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels — have had multiple coaches tell me he could end up as the No. 1 player in the 2023. Two top-10 commitments in 2023 for North Carolina, with Jackson alongside Simeon Wilcher.

Jackson held offers from over a dozen programs, and was linked heavily to South Carolina before former Gamecocks head coach Frank Martin was fired. In the end, UNC won out over all the competition.
“The run that they made in the tournament and talking with coach Hubert Davis about the new playing style that they have at UNC, I saw that I would fit perfectly,” Jackson told On3’s Joe Tipton were his reasons for picking North Carolina.
While Jackson is the first major recruiting coup of the offseason for Davis and the Tar Heels, UNC has kept the momentum from its memorable NCAA Tournament run rolling. Four of the team’s starters from that Final Four team–guards R.J. Davis and Caleb Love, wing Leaky Black and center Armando Bacot–have already announced they are returning to Chapel Hill for next season.
There’s a lot of time between now and November, but UNC is regarded as a virtual lock to be preseason No. 1 when polls are released.
