North Carolina forward Kerwin Walton found minutes hard to come by in his second year with the Tar Heels. So he’s entering the transfer portal in hopes of finding a new home.
The former four-star forward from Minnesota started 20 games and played in 29 as a freshman in the 2020-21 season. He averaged 8.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists that year.
But the 2021-22 season saw him get just one start in 31 games. He averaged less than 15 minutes per game and less than four points a game.
Tar Heels fans are sad to see him go though. Many have taken to Twitter lamenting his departure after two seasons. But some others are excited by the idea of having another scholarship slot open to give to someone else in the transfer portal:
With Kerwin Walton heading to the transfer portal — today is the last day for players to do so while maintaining their eligibility — UNC now has one available scholarship for next season.
And to the transfer portal Hubert Davis goes…

Sad to see Kerwin Walton transferring… thought he was a hell of a shooter that just fell into a slump last year. Sure he’ll be successful wherever he ends up tho! #GoHeels

Mad love to Kerwin Walton! Good luck going forward! Would be shocked to see him land anywhere other than Minnesota wit Dawson Garcia!

The 2021-22 season was head coach Hubert Davis’ first year in charge, and he promptly made it a memorable one.
North Carolina beat arch-rival Duke twice in Coach K’s final year at the helm en route to reaching the national title game. They ultimately lost to Kansas after blowing a massive first half lead, but are well-positioned to return to form next year.
Thanks to another year of superb recruiting, North Carolina will be among the favorites to win it all. But if Kerwin Walton’s departure lets UNC bring in one more star, that may be enough to get them over the hump and win another title.
Who will replace Kerwin Walton at UNC?
