Week 1 isn’t even here yet and this college football season is already off the rails, thanks to South Carolina’s current quarterback situation.
On Tuesday morning, ESPN’s Chris Low reported that South Carolina will begin the Shane Beamer era with a graduate assistant starting at quarterback. Zeb Noland, who originally joined Beamer’s staff after playing at FCS-level North Dakota State, will start for the Gamecocks against Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
Noland, who had an extra year of eligibility remaining, traded in his whistle and clipboard for a helmet and pads after Luke Doty, South Carolina’s projected QB1, injured his foot earlier this summer. After returning to the field, Noland beat out St. Francis (Pa.) transfer Jason Brown to be the Gamecocks’ starter.
It goes without saying that even for a chaotic sport like college football, this is absurd. There have been a lot of Bishop Sycamore jokes, among other reactions, to this surprising news.

This is such a crazy story. Zeb Noland, who came to South Carolina to be a coach, will instead be the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback on Saturday, sources told @ClowESPN. https://t.co/xvWUPOftnQ

Noland began his college career at Iowa State, where as a sophomore in 2018, he threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns in a game against Oklahoma. He then transferred to NDSU, where he backed up San Francisco 49ers rookie and No. 3 overall draft pick Trey Lance.
This spring, Noland took over for Lance as the Bison starter, passing for 721 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions in seven games.
Now, he’s about to be the opening day starter for an SEC program. Wild times indeed.
