All eyes are already turning to college football’s upcoming 2020 season. Once again, the SEC is expected to be the best conference in the country.
ESPN has released its initial FPI rankings for the 2020 season. The FPI – known as the Football Power Index – is a measure of team strength and predictor of future season success. To no surprise, seven SEC teams are included in the top-20 of the newly released FPI .
But surprisingly, no SEC team is included in the top-three of the new rankings. Alabama is the highest ranked SEC team, checking in at No. 4. Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide will have to replace Tua Tagovailoa – who’s off to the NFL Draft – but rest assured Alabama is once again loaded with talent.
The next-highest ranked SEC team in the FPI isn’t LSU or Georgia – it’s Texas A&M. Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies are No. 8 in the 2020 FPI rankings. Georgia and LSU each have the difficult challenge of replacing its 2019 starting quarterback, so it’s tough to peg exactly how each will fare this season.
Here’s a look at how the FPI has ranked each SEC team ahead of the 2020 season:
8. Texas A&M
34. South Carolina
39. Mississippi State
42. Ole Miss
Florida is a trendy pick to win the 2020 SEC title. The SEC East Division will most likely be won by either the Gators or Georgia.
In the West Division, it looks like it’ll be a three-team race between Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU. Auburn also looks like it’ll be in the mix.
