Another big Russian is selected by the Canes.
Roman Bausov is listed at 6’5”, 190 pounds. The tall Russian defenseman needs to fill out his frame, but the Carolina Hurricanes are banking on his height and defensive prowess as keys to his development as a prospect.
Carolina selected Bausov in the third round, 87th overall, in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Through the first three rounds, the Canes have selected four Russians from their five picks. It is clear that General Manager Eric Tulsky is comfortable drafting Russians, as evidenced by the successful signing of Alexander Nikishin this season.
GMEC is looking for size, talent, and value in the Russian pool. Based on early assessments, Tulsky is meeting those objectives.
Bausov has the height, and the weight and strength will come. The scouting services note his strong fundamentals, footwork, vision, and length.
Last season was Bausov’s first full season in the top Russian junior league. He played for MHC Dynamo Moscow, an affiliate of HC Dynamo Moscow, one of the most successful teams in the KHL.
In his rookie season, Bausov had two goals and nine assists in 41 games.
