The Panthers may be down a starting guard for their season opener against the New York Jets
The Carolina Panthers have announced that starting right guard John Miller has been placed on the club’s reserve/COVID-19 list. That means he is unable to practice or be at team facilities until he has been medically cleared to return. That could put him in jeopardy of missing Sunday’s season opener against the New York Jets.
Miller was placed on the list because he was either considered a close contact with a known COVID-19 patient or because he tested positive for the disease himself. The Panthers are not allowed, per NFL rules, to state which is the case for a specific player. Unlike the standard injured reserve list, the reserve/COVID-19 list does not have a specific minimum timeline for return. Miller could be back in time for Week 1, or he could be sidelined for several weeks. Due to the nature of COVID and patient privacy, we won’t know more until either Miller speaks or he returns to practice.
In the meantime, look for Dennis Daley or Brady Christensen to step into his role on the offensive line. Both have had promising camps, giving the Panthers options at guard instead of a hole.
