Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon had himself a day during the final practice of training camp, reeling in a pair of eye-opening interceptions against the Baltimore Ravens. The rookie also seems to already be quite an endearing presence amongst his peers.
When talking to media members following Thursday’s session, defensive coordinator Phil Snow gave a humorous assessment of Nixon’s performance, suggesting the 6-foot-3, 313-pounder may have a bit of a mouthpiece on him.
“We’re getting better at what we’re doing,” Snow said of his defense’s five picks on the afternoon. “So that was good to see the turnovers today.”
Then—when asked of the 2021 fifth-round pick—Snow replied, with an ear-to-ear smile, “We’ll never hear the end of him now.”
Joking aside, Snow would continue by heaping some praise on the talented 22-year-old.
“When we drafted him, we knew we were gonna get a big, athletic guy. He’s got really long arms. And, so, we’re excited about him. He’s getting better every day. He’s been fun to coach. So I think he’s got a bright future here.”
Carolina hopes to tap into the appealing athletic profile of the former Iowa Hawkeye. He should serve as a luxury of a depth piece, at least in this raw stage of his career, along one of the more potent defensive lines in the league.
