Panthers GM Sends Clear Message About Baker Mayfield

April 30, 2022 by The Spun

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield on the field.

The first two rounds of the 2022 NFL draft saw only one quarterback drafted: former Pitt standout Kenny Pickett, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Several top quarterback prospects were expected to go in the second round. However, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, Liberty’s Malik Willis and Ole Miss’ Matt Corral all fell to the third round.

The latter was swooped up by the Carolina Panthers with one of the last picks on Friday night. Carolina had been in the mix for former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, but selecting Corral changed all of that.

According to Panthers beat writer David Newton, the team is no longer interested in trading for the Cleveland Browns quarterback.

“Panthers GM Scott Fitterer says getting Matt Corral takes him out of the market for a veteran, namely Baker Mayfield,” he said on Twitter late Friday night.

Carolina was really the only team showing interest in the veteran quarterback. Now that the Panthers are out of the running, it’s truly a mystery as to where Mayfield will land next.

The Seattle Seahawks were mentioned as a possible destination, but they seem happy to run with Drew Lock and Geno Smith for now.

At this point, it’s possible the Browns don’t trade Mayfield before the start of the 2022 season. Deshaun Watson could receive a suspension, where having Mayfield on the roster would be a massive benefit.

Where will Mayfield play in 2022?
