Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold took an exciting step in the right direction on Friday night. That, however, isn’t stopping him from working towards the bigger picture.
Darnold spoke with reporters after the team’s 34-9 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and suggested the offense still needs to hammer out the smaller things as they head into Week 1.
“We just need to fix the details, for me personally,” Darnold said. “Just clean up some of the reads. I think that’s the biggest thing from tonight. I think if something’s not there, understanding where my outs are.”
There was some improvisation that needed to be done early on for Darnold and the offense. He did appear a tad jumpy and thrown a bit off his spot in the first quarter, but landed the proverbial plane rather nicely to cap off his night.
Darnold led a sharp 12-play, 84-yard scoring drive in the two-minute offense to close out the second quarter. He ended the outing having completed 19 of his 25 throws for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Again, it’s assuring to see Darnold not immediately basking in the glory of a pretty buzz-worthy outing. There is more work to be done, and it seems he and his offense are well aware of that.
