As we did last week, we’ll repeat—the Carolina Panthers are not actually acquiring a player from another team in this post. Here, on the prowl, we simply take a guy from the current week’s opposition in a hypothetical setting.
Now, being as though this week is all about a certain homecoming, we’ll make it Cam Newton-centric.
Even with Newton back in the fold, the Panthers have to look towards the future of the position. After all, Cam is only on his current deal for the remainder of this season.
If we’re looking for a new quarterback, we need someone with some grit. We need someone with spunk. We need someone with experience.
And for that, we choose Washington backup passer Kyle Allen! He took over for Newton before and we’ll have him do it again!
*insert troll face here*
Ok, seriously now. We’re actually going with right guard Brandon Scherff.
This selection really wasn’t an easy one—not when Washington also has certified talents such as defensive end Chase Young, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and wide receiver Terry McLaurin. But Scherff’s proven pedigree at a spot Carolina could certainly use stability at was too much to ignore.
The fifth overall selection from seven years ago is fresh off a First-team All-Pro campaign. 2020 saw Scherff, who’s still only 29 years old, relinquish three sacks according to Pro Football Focus—while grading out at an 82.5 in pass protection, 82.6 in run blocking and an 86.3 overall.
In 2021, Scherff has allowed zero sacks and just seven pressures through 177 pass-blocking snaps. So, yeah, this pick did end up being about Newton. Because even after being away from Bank of America Stadium for literally 800 days, he still comes back needing help on his offensive line.
Some things never change.
Did we get it right?
