Through the first six weeks of the 2025-26 NBA season, age is starting to catch up with the Golden State Warriors. So far, the team has dealt with injuries to Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, and Al Horford, along with seeing major missed time from Jonathan Kuminga.
With an 11-10 roster through 21 games, the Warriors have some changes to make. The health of their older stars can’t be guaranteed, only hoped for. But the Kuminga situation doesn’t feel fixable, and while his status on the team is still uncertain, Golden State recently made a bold roster move after signing Seth Curry to a deal for the rest of the season.
“The Warriors plan to add guard LJ Cryer on a two-way contract, per sources,” Anthony Slater wrote on X. “To make room, the Warriors are waiving Jackson Rowe.”
Despite the Santa Cruz Warriors’ poor record, Cryer is averaging 24.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists on 44.4% shooting from the field, 41.4% from 3-point range on more than 12 attempts per night.
The Warriors Signing Cryer
Cryer played for Baylor and won the NCAA college basketball national championship in 2021. In his junior season in Waco, he was named to the third-team All-Big 12. Cryer then transferred to Houston, and in the two following years, he earned second-team and then third-team honors, and was finally named an All-American in 2025.
In his five college seasons, Cryer averaged 13.5 points, two rebounds, and 1.8 assists on 41.3% shooting from three. He lost only 29 regular-season games, made the March Madness tournament each year, and made the Sweet Sixteen three times.
Professionally, Cryer went undrafted and, though signed with the Warriors over the summer, was dropped from their roster before the season. But now, after his success in the G-League, he’s being added to the first-team roster.
“Golden State fans were treated to some of Cryer’s microwave scoring ability during preseason where he led the team in 3-point percentage (54.5%) over the last four games,” Peter O’Keefe wrote on the guard. “He also led the team in plus-minus during that span, while delivering a big fourth-quarter performance in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers.”
The Warriors have very minimal financial flexibility when it comes to signing more players, which is why Cryer is taking Jackson Rowe‘s spot on the team.
Seth Curry Signing
Though not completely unexpected, the Warriors did make the recent move to sign the brother of their franchise star. The younger Curry had previously signed with the team after they reached an agreement with Kuminga, but he was eventually dropped due to cap issues. However, Golden State said they’d eventually resign Curry, and now they have, in hopes of adding shooting for a team that’s 15th in percentage from deep.
“Seth Curry, who is entering his 12th NBA season, started his career with the franchise’s G League program in Santa Cruz but then purposefully ventured elsewhere — to 10 NBA teams — to map his own professional path out of his brother’s shadow,” Shams Charania and Anthony Slater wrote for ESPN. “The younger Curry brother has made 945 career 3s at a 43.3% clip, the seventh-highest percentage in league history. He shot an NBA-best 45.6% from 3-point range last season.”
Curry is only on a one-year deal and will have to wait to play alongside his brother, as Steph is currently dealing with a quad strain.
In a separate article, O’Keefe mentioned that with the Curry signing, more pressure falls on Buddy Hield. The veteran shooter has been mentioned in trade rumors, and though overall a threat from outside, is averaging career lows in scoring and three-point shooting percentage.
“Hield has failed to deliver as a veteran sharpshooter to begin his second year with Golden State, having averaged a career-low 7.2 points and 2.0 rebounds on just 40.9% shooting from the floor and 30.8% from 3-point range,” O’Keefe wrote.
“While it’s unlikely that the younger Curry emerges as a true double-digit scorer for the Warriors, he could certainly deliver far greater efficiency after drilling a career-high 45.6% from 3-point range with the Charlotte Hornets last season.”
