It probably didn’t feel great for Matt Corral to spend his Thursday night not getting a call out of the green room. Then it probably felt a bit worse the day after, when he was in his Las Vegas hotel room watching the second and third rounds dwindle down without hearing his name again.
But he eventually did. And when he did, Corral was elated at the opportunity.
On Friday night, the Carolina Panthers traded up to the 94th overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft to select the University of Mississippi quarterback. The 23-year-old would then receive the long-awaited call he’ll surely never forget.

With the franchise having so poorly mishandled the quarterback position in recent years, it must’ve felt great for owner David Tepper and head coach Matt Rhule to dial their guy up as well. Although he may not start right away, Corral does bring the competition this team was looking for under center.
And, hopefully for the Panthers, Corral brings the stability and winning culture they’ve been vying for under Tepper and Rhule.
