Much has been made about the San Francisco 49ers‘ potential struggle to attract free agents thanks to the conspiracy theory about their stadium’s proximity to a electrical substation.
Yet, 49ers president and general manager John Lynch isn’t worried about that being an issue with free agency right around the corner.
Lynch spoke publicly at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis about the reported issue and said he believes the 49ers will be able to sign players even with the highly publicized theory that the substation causes injuries.
The 49ers have been inundated with messages about the substation, even though the theory has been widely debunked by scientists.
Still, Arizona Cardinals rival Trey McBride suggested San Francisco may struggle to attract players in free agency if they believe the substation causes player injuries.
John Lynch Isn’t Worried About the Substation Conspiracy Theory
It’s a big offseason for the 49ers. They have cap space after the inevitable release of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and need to make decisions on wideout Jauan Jennings — and potentially kicker Eddy Pineiro.
But even though the substation theory in the front of people’s minds, and the league calendar is set to roll March 11, Lynch isn’t worried about bringing marquee players to the Bay Area.
“I sure hope not. I don’t think so,” Lynch said when asked if the issue could affect their recruiting pitch. “We have a tremendous place to live, to play, an iconic organization.”
Lynch referenced the events he has been a part of in his role with the 49ers and how the team’s history — the 49ers were the undisputed Team of the 1980s, are tied with the Dallas Cowboys for third-most Super Bowl wins (5) and have played in the Super Bowl twice since 2020 — speaks for itself.
“A the Super Bowl, the very first event I went to was a Night of Champions,” Lynch said. “I went to support the guys who were up on stage, and it was Joe [Montana], John Taylor, Tommy Rathman, Eric Wright and Ronnie Lott.
“Keena Turner and Harris Barton were there as well, and man the privilege you felt being a part of this organization, that’s what I think people feel when thy think about the Niners; and a team that’s got a chance to compete at the highest level and compete for championships. That’s what I think people will think about.”
John Lynch: The 49ers are Trying to Debunk the Substation Theory
As a former player, Lynch can relate to players’ concerns about the potential threat for injuries.
So that’s why even though Lynch doesn’t put much stock into the substation theory, he and the organization are still doing what they can to get to the facts.
“Anything our players, especially when it comes to health and safety which is so important, absolutely we’ll look into that,” Lynch said. “[We’re] working with our team to do just that. [I’m] encouraged some of the early things — our chief medical officer Dr. [Allen] Sills basically stated there’s no literature that speaks to that being an issue.”
