The Buffalo Bills face a difficult decision after the conference championship games have wrapped up — to go ahead with their head coaching search and pick their best option, or wait two more weeks before interviewing what could be their dream candidate.
The Bills have already conducted several interviews with candidates to replace Sean McDermott after his abrupt firing last week. The team is casting a wide net, speaking both to expected candidates like Brian Daboll and Joe Brady along with some wild cards — which includes longtime quarterback Philip Rivers and his zero NFL coaching experience.
The Bills now must choose whether they risk losing potential candidates to wait on a coveted member of the Seattle Seahawks staff, or go ahead with one of the other candidates and potentially lose out.
Bills Facing Decision on Klint Kubiak
The Bills have been connected to Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, an in-demand candidate who just led his team to the Super Bowl. The Bills would not be able to interview Kubiak until after the Super Bowl, however, which reporter Matt Bove suggested would put them in a difficult spot.
“Now things get very interesting for the Bills. How bad (if at all) do they want Klint Kubiak?” Bove wrote in a post on X. “Are they willing to wait two more weeks just for the process to start? Theyâd essentially have to decide if they want him before they even get a chance to talk to him.”
The Bills would risk losing out on other potential candidates to fill Kubiak’s staff if they do wait, Bove added.
“If heâs the guy they want, of course they should wait,” Bove wrote. “The fear is that he wonât be able to put together a staff because so many other jobs will get filled between now and then. Itâs a risk, but itâs worth it *IF* you know heâs the guy you want.”
Per NFL rules, the Bills would not be able to conduct an interview with Kubiak until at least Feb. 9.
Seahawks Aiming to Retain Klint Kubiak
It’s not clear how receptive Kubiak would be to leading the Bills, with insider Tony Pauline reporting that he isn’t keen on the Buffalo job.
“Iâm told that Kubiak wants to go to a franchise that already has a quarterback in place, which the Bills most certainly do. Yet several people in the know tell me they do not think Kubiak will be the next head coach in Buffalo, with some saying itâs definitely not happening,” Pauline reported in EssentiallySports.
Pauline added that Kubiak could have another attractive job offer, while the Seahawks are also doing everything they can to retain him.
“Kubiak is also a leading candidate for the Las Vegas job, and the Raiders are expected to select their quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, with the first pick in this Aprilâs draft,” Pauline reported. “At the same time, multiple sources tell me that the Seahawks are putting on a full-court press to keep Kubiak on staff.”
The Bills do get the chance to interview another candidate after Sunday. Denver Broncos passing game coordinator Davis Webb, the former backup to Josh Allen in Buffalo, will be able to interview after his team lost to the New England Patriots.
