Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills are in the midst of a head coach search, since the team parted ways longtime head coach Sean McDermott on Monday, January 19. But, there was a bit of bright news on Thursday, January 22, when Allen was nominated for MVP, an award that he won last season.
Allen was hoping to take the Bills all the way during the 2025-26 season, but it didn’t happen. The team fell in a 33-30 overtime game to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in the divisional round of the playoffs on Saturday, January 17.
Allen’s disappointment manifested in the form of tears after that game, and that’s partly why owner Terry Pegula says he let McDermott go.
“My decision to bring in a new coach was based on the results of our game in Denver,” Pegula said on Wednesday, January 21, during a press conference. “I want to take you in the locker room after that game. I looked around, the first thing I noticed was our quarterback with his head down, crying.”
He added, “I looked at all the other players. I looked at their faces and our coaches. I walked over to Josh, he didn’t even acknowledge I was there. First thing I said to him, I said, ‘that was a catch,’ we all know what I’m talking about. He didn’t acknowledge me. He just sat there sobbing. He was listless.”
“He had given everything he had to try to win that game,” he continued. “And looking around, so did all the other players on the team.”
Josh Allen News Comes With a Catch for the Buffalo Bills Quarterback
So, Allen is up for MVP, but the bad news is that, even if he deserves it, the odds are stacked against him, literally.
In a Thursday, January 22, feature for SI, Peter Dewey lays out each finalist’s MVP odds, and unfortunately, Allen is at the bottom.
Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams is right at the top, followed by Drake Maye of the New England Patriots.
“Stafford closed as the favorite to win the NFL MVP after he led the league in passing yards and passing yards and passing touchdowns during the regular season,” Dewey says in the piece.
He adds, “While the Rams finished with just the No. 5 seed in the NFC, they also played in the toughest division in the NFL and have still mad the NFC title game. Voters had to submit their selection before the playoffs, but Stafford has certainly shown why he deserved MVP consideration with the Rams’ playoff run.”
Why Josh Allen is Not Likely to Win
As for Allen, Dewey says, “Speaking of Allen, he likely lost a chance at back-to-back MVPs with the Bills losing the AFC East to the Patriots and finishing sixth in the conference.”
“Allen closed at +30000 to win this award, but his passing numbers (like Lawrence) did not stack up with Maye and Stafford,” Dewey adds. “He did have a ton of success as a runner in the 2025 season, but the fact that Maye finished higher than him in the same division likely crushed Allen’s MVP case.”
So, it might not be a two-fer for Allen. But, that doesn’t take away how much the Buffalo Bills love this quarterback.
