Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes faces a long road to recovery after a season-ending injury in December, but he’s also spending some time helping another quarterback get ready for the 2026 season.
Mahomes has remained in Kansas City to undergo rehab for a torn ACL and LCL, a complicated injury that is expected to have a long rehab. While he’s preparing to take the field, the Chiefs signal-caller took the chance to help out New York Giants quarterback Jaxon Dart as he prepares to work with a coach very familiar to Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes Talking Up His Former Coach
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that Dart reached out to Mahomes to get his thoughts on Matt Nagy, the former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who is taking the same post with the Giants.
As Raanan reported, Mahomes was more than willing to share his thoughts on what Dart can expect from his former coach.
“Dart, fresh off a rookie season with 24 total touchdowns and seven turnovers, talked on multiple occasions with Mahomes about working with Nagy, according to multiple sources close to the QB,” Raanan reported. “He came away impressed. He also told reporters last week that he spoke with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce about his former coordinator and received rave reviews.”
Patrick Mahomes Preparing for His Own Transition
The Chiefs are undergoing some changes of their own after announcing that Nagy would not return after the expiration of his contract. The Chiefs brought back Eric Bieniemy, their former offensive coordinator who has maintained close ties with both Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.
Kelce shared some praise for Bieniemy, saying he has been a big part of the team’s past success when he was leading the offense.
âWeek in, week out, he has our team prepared and ready to go,â Kelce said. âEveryone says itâs an Andy Reid offenseâhe has 51%, Iâm not going to say itâs not. But it is a collective group putting this offense together.â
Kelce also dispelled the idea that head coach Andy Reid sets the tone for the offense, praising Bieniemy for his role.
âI ask everybody, âCome on in, see whoâs standing up in front of our offense getting us ready for situational football, whoâs in front of us week in week out at halftime trying to make adjustments. Who is the guy thatâs rallying this group and has the emotion as a player and as a coach to keep us firing as an offensive unit?â And thatâs Eric Bieniemy.â
Mahomes has plenty of individual work to prepare for the upcoming season as well, with more work to do in his rehab. The Chiefs quarterback said his goal is to return to the field in time to play in the season opener, but it’s not clear yet whether he can stick to that timeline.
If not, the Chiefs will likely need to find a new backup to hold the line while Mahomes finishes his recovery. Last year’s No. 2, veteran Gardner Minshew, is set to hit free agency.
