Ex-Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams had a storing season that took them to the NFC Championship game on Sunday, January 26, against the Seattle Seahawks. It was a high-stakes game and brought the drama to be expected from such a game, with a close 31-27 final score.
But, in the end, the Rams weren’t able to hold off the Seattle Seahawks, and the Los Angeles Rams headed home empty handed. But, that doesn’t take away from Stafford’s stellar season. According to NFL research, Stafford finished the 2025 NFL regular season with a passing yards total of 4,707, leading the NFL, and 46 touchdown. He led the team to a 12-5 record and only had eight interceptions over 17 games.
“It was a battle the whole game,” Stafford said of the game after the Rams’ loss to the Seahawks. It wasn’t like we were all just waiting for one play here or there. There was a million plays in a football game that can turn the tide and we had our opportunities, didn’t make them.”
He added, “I told (Smith) I love him (after the muffed punt), and I do. Guy wants to go out there and make every play he possibly can, and sometimes it doesn’t happen. Been in those situations and doesn’t change how I feel about the human being or the person or the player. Love the guy, trust him, and wish nothing but the best for him honestly.”
Former Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford is Up for MVP
So, Stafford didn’t bring a second Super Bowl title to the Los Angeles Rams yet, at least. But, he’s been nominated for MVP for the 2025-26 season, and he certainly deserves the honor.
But, following the Los Angeles Rams’ loss on Sunday, the former Detroit Lions quarterback got some bad news in that he’s fallen a touch in the MVP odds. But, the good news is that many betters still think Stafford can and will pull off the award.
According to Roto Wire, Stafford is still a hair above Patriots quarterback Drake Maye for the honor. But, they want Maye to get it, stating, “This award clearly should go to Drake Maye,” they note. Vegas Insider also has Stafford a bit above Maye.
Super Bowl MVP Odds
Of the remaining players going all the way, it’s no surprise that according to The Big Lead, after the Seahawks’ win on Sunday, quarterback Sam Darnold shot to the top of the odds tally for landing the honor this season. “The narrative and the numbers all point to Darnold, who opens as the clear favorite to take home the hardware,” they note in a feature published on Sunday, January 25. “Coming off a 346-yard, three-touchdown masterpiece in the conference title game, he is playing the best football of his career at the perfect time. If Seattle wins, it will likely be because Darnold carved up the defense.”
No. 2 is Drake Maye. In the piece, they state that, “Maye enters his first Super Bowl as the underdog signal-caller, but his dual-threat ability gives him a unique edge. His rushing prowess was key in the AFC Championship, and a similar performance on the biggest stage could sway voters his way. If the Patriots pull off the upset, the award is almost certainly his.”
