The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2025 season went up in flames on December 14, after news that quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a serious knee injury in the elimination loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Not long after the game was over, Mahomes broke silence on this injury in a telling X post, which read: “Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever ⏰.”
Needless to say, this post scared fans and followers, who feared the worst after reading the Chiefs QB’s solemn words. Unfortunately, it did not take long for those fears to be confirmed.
Patrick Mahomes Suffers Torn ACL as Chiefs’ 2025 Season Ends in Heartbreaking News
GettyKansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Before the night was over, multiple insiders reported that Mahomes had indeed suffered a torn ACL.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter were among those reporting this heartbreaking injury update.
Obviously, this officially ends a nightmare season for Mahomes, who has not missed the AFC Championship game (or the postseason in general) since taking over as the Chiefs’ starter. The larger question, as the offseason goes along, is whether Mahomes will be able to recover in time for Week 1 of the 2026 campaign.
Torn ACL’s can take anywhere from nine months to over a year to recover, and Mahomes will presumably undergo surgery sometime in December. That means the Chiefs will likely be without their quarterback for OTAs and training camp, and could be without him for the early portion of the 2026 schedule if his recovery ends up being on the longer side.
Mahomes has rarely missed time with injury throughout his career and is famous for his rigorous training program, which focuses on flexibility and pliability for injury prevention. There’s no doubt the Chiefs superstar will give his rehabilitation program everything he has, but as Mahomes said, some things are in the hands of a higher power.
