Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald has enjoyed much cause for a celebration this season, and it only grew on Saturday with a 41-6 beatdown of the San Francisco 49ers.
Besides MacDonald’s first career playoff win, he led the Seahawks to a franchise-best 14 regular season wins and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Despite all the success, he hasn’t enjoyed a cigar yet, unlike the team, which did that in the locker room after the Week 18 win over the 49ers. That’s when the Seahawks clinched the No. 1 seed and made it easier to smoke the 49ers for a second time in three weeks.
“No, I’m amateur when it comes to that kind of stuff,” MacDonald told reporters afterward when asked if he had a cigar.
Now, the Seahawks are off to the NFC Championship Game, and there’s a chance it could be against another NFC West rival in the Los Angeles Rams. Whether or not MacDonald would try a cigar after another win remains to be seen.
Mike MacDonald Tips Cap to 49ers
While Seattle’s defense dominated a high-flying 49ers offense again, with nine points allowed in the last two meetings, MacDonald tipped his cap to the NFC West rival. The Seahawks never let the 49ers back in the ball game after a 24-6 first half.
“They’re a tremendous offense, probably top whatever in the league and have been doing it for a long time,” MacDonald said. “They have great players, they have great coaches, and the numbers back it up. Our guys played great complimentary football today. They really did.”
“I can’t say enough, but I can’t wait to watch the tape,” MacDonald added. “There’s a lot of assists going on in there, guys rushing unselfishly to free somebody else up or to let somebody else have a two-way go so they can cover for them.”
“How we played in the back end, it felt like we were ahead of plays,” he continued. “These guys did a great job. I’m looking forward to watching it. I won’t watch it on the plane, but I’ll watch it tomorrow.”
Mike MacDonald Give Shout Out to Seahawks Fans
During the FOX broadcast, commentator and former NFL quarterback Tom Brady brought up how the Seahawks fans make Lumen Field a tough place to play.
It showed all the more on Saturday as the top-seeded Seahawks dominated start to finish. MacDonald made the most of the opportunity to credit the fans.
“I’m glad you brought that up,” MacDonald told a reporter regarding the fans. “Of all the things we’ve been thinking about over the last 30 minutes or so, that’s definitely a point of pride that we can have at least one home playoff game in front of the 12s.”
“They’ve been dynamite this year. They’ve been absolutely incredible. We’re really excited to be able to stay home,” MacDonald added.
Seattle will play at home for the NFC Championship Game for the first time since the 2014 season when the Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks went on to the Super Bowl and lost the New England Patriots that year.
