With the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, the story of Sam Darnold overcoming the adversity from his early struggles is being told countless times leading up to the big game. However, one new angle on this comes from someone who was selected in that same QB draft class.
On Feb. 3, Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, who went a few picks after Darnold in the 2018 NFL Draft, spoke about the Seahawks star. Allen and Darnold are close friends and shared his thoughts on seeing his fellow signal-caller find success in these last two seasons.
“He’s just continued to work hard,” Allen said on the Feb. 3 edition of “First Things First.” “He’s been at a few different stops and obviously got his opportunity last year in Minnesota. They let him go, and now he’s playing in the Super Bowl for the Seattle Seahawks. So he’s worked extremely hard for it. And again, I’ve got nothing but love and respect for Sammy D, and I’ll be cheering and pulling for him hard.”
Josh Allen Is Pulling for Sam Darnold, Seahawks
Moreover, he went into detail about his rooting interest in Darnold and the Seahawks, which makes sense given that Allen wouldn’t want to see a division rival win a Super Bowl before him.
“I have great respect for both teams,“ Allen added. “I’ve been fortunate to know Coach Vrabel for a little bit. I have a lot of respect for him. Drake Maye, obviously. I’ve got a good relationship with him. But Sam Darnold, that’s my boy. We go back to the draft.
“Even before the draft, we’ve hung out before the draft, when we were in college, we met at, I think, it was the Touchdown Club of Columbus, going into his sophomore year, my junior year. And like I said, we lived pretty close together. We spent a lot of time in the offseason together playing golf and hanging out. So I’m rooting for my man there, who wears No. 14 for the Seattle Seahawks.”
Sam Darnold Holds No Sour Grapes Toward Jets, Panthers
During a Jan. 30 appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,“ Darnold reflected on his time with the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers and didn’t harbor any sour grapes toward either franchise.
“The days in New York, the days in Carolina, those are part of my journey, and they’re part of my experience,“ Darnold told Dan Patrick. “I loved every single part of it. Yeah, there were some lows that sucked. I’m not going to lie to you. That’s part of it, though. I learned so much from that, and I’m able to move on.”
Moreover, Darnold talked about how he handled adversity during those two stints when things weren’t going right, as they did in Minnesota and Seattle, which has now given him a different perspective.
“It’s funny,“ Darnold added. “After every single, after every single game we lost or things that didn’t go well, I was able to wake up the next day and see the sun rise and go into the building and see my teammates and have fun with my coaches. That’s a part of life. I think being able to realize that at this point in my career allows you to take it one day at a time and enjoy every single little moment that you get with your teammates.”
