After a nearly 3-hour rain delay, the 3rd game of the ALDS finally began at Comerica Park this afternoon. Despite the change, the Seattle Mariners were able to secure the win in Detroit against the Tigers. They took control of the series, beating the Tigers with a 2-1 game lead.
At the start of the 9th inning, the Mariners held the lead, 8-1. This gap allowed the back of the bullpen to take a break, and pitcher Caleb Ferguson entered for the 9th inning. However, the Tigers were able to pull up 8-4 against Ferguson, and forced the substitution of Andres Munoz.
Munoz then forced Dillon Dingler to fly out to left-field, and first baseman Josh Naylor was able to grab it and follow with a touch to first to get the unassisted double play and end the game 8-4.
Mariners Performance
A ‘great performance all-around’ are the words being used to describe the Mariners game today. The team set the pace and made a statement on the road as they compete for the championship. They were able to build momentum in 3rd inning, and keep it going until the end.
With an incredible offense, the Seattle team combined all necessary aspects to achieve a win this game. They offered great at-bats by everyone tonight. With 10 strike outs, they were still able to come together for 3 home runs for the evening.
Key Players
There were plenty of key players for the Mariners today. Pitcher Logan Gilbert’s presence on the mound was dominant. With his first start of the postseason, he had no walks for 6 innings on the night. He pitched an impressive 85 throws with outstanding splits and sliders combined with great fastballs in the midst of a tough Tiger’s lineup. Luckily, some of the weight was lifted off of his shoulders and his teammates started making runs in the 3rd inning.
In the 3rd inning, Victor Robles managed to send the ball into the left field corner for a lead-off double against Jack Flaherty. Then, J.P. Crawford sent a single into center field. Robles found himself held up at third base, however, an odd throw to home from Riley Greene was missed by catcher Dillon Dingler, and Robles was able to score. Despite a challenge by Detroit, the run was confirmed on review, and the Mariners got the 1-0 lead. Randy Arozarena was then able to follow up and draw Crawford in for the 2-0 lead.
Cal Raleigh did what Cal Raleigh does. The 28-year baseball player hit his 61st home run right into the Tiger’s bullpen. The ball then bounced and landed in the hands of the only Mariners fan in the area. Aptly, he donned a ‘Dump Here’ jersey with the number 61 printed big and bold in the center. He then lifted his jersey to reveal another ‘Dump Here’ jersey with the number 62 ready and waiting.
Other notable players include Eugenio Suarez. He was able to make an impressive defensive play that turned into a sacrifice play on the Tiger’s thanks to Suarez’s presence. His offensive play was also beneficial to the Mariners, as it has been since he joined the team.
There were whispers of Josh Naylor’s absence in Detroit with his wife is expecting their child, but he was able to make the game and secure that unassisted double play for an incredible win for the Seattle Mariners.
