If there was any question on whether or not the Buffalo Bills could retain offensive coordinator Joe Brady throughout this wide-open coaching cycle, it was all but ended Monday morning when head coach Sean McDermott was fired by the ownership.
Now the OC, who was already interviewing at nearly every other head coach opening in the NFL, is even more unlikely to keep his position when the new head ball coach arrives in Buffalo with his hand-selected staff.
It is still very much a possibility that the coordinator could interview with the Bills for their head coach vacancy, but Monday night’s news may mean that Brady’s next destination is all but final.
“The Ravens plan to bring in Bills OC Joe Brady this week for a second interview for their head coaching job, per sources,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported very late Monday night.
Given the timing of today’s hirings, with four of the ten jobs being filled this weekend, this feels like the next shoe to drop.
Brady is only the second coach of the 16 candidates the Baltimore Ravens interviewed to be given a second.
It is not uncommon in the NFL for the second interview to end in a job offer. Seeing as ex-Ravens assistant Anthony Weaver’s second interview is scheduled for Tuesday, if no announcement is made and Brady makes the trip to Baltimore, he may very well leave with his first NFL head coaching job.
Other Head Coach Vacancies Filled
The Bills unexpectedly entered the head coach market on Monday. They immediately became the best landing spot for any wannabe head coach.
Four of the vacancies have now been filled, and only six remain open.
Those six are the Buffalo Bills, the Cleveland Browns, the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Las Vegas Raiders.
The New York Giants got the hiring started when they landed Super Bowl-winning coach John Harbaugh on a five-year deal.
The Atlanta Falcons struck next, landing ex-Browns head coach Kevin Stefansky.
Then it was Buffalo’s division rival Miami Dolphins, who inked up ex-Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley early Monday morning.
And finally, the Tennessee Titans agree to terms on another familiar face, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh.
Things are beginning to heat up with very few people with NFL head coaching experience remaining on the market; a majority of the six openings will likely be filled by first-time guys.
Keep an eye on Brian Daboll as one of those few former head coaches looking for a job.
