Ex-Bulls Guard’s Lawyer Challenges ‘Choking’ Allegations

November 19, 2025 by Heavy

Former Chicago Bulls guard Patrick Beverley, a Chicago native whose fiery personality made him a fan favorite during his 2023 stint with his hometown team, is facing a felony assault charge in Texas stemming from an alleged incident involving his younger sister. Beverley’s attorney, however, is disputing the account laid out in a sworn police affidavit, saying it reflects only “one side of the story” and does not accurately depict what happened.

Beverley, 37, was arrested earlier this month in Fort Bend County, Texas, and charged with third-degree felony family assault by impeding breath or circulation, a crime under Texas law most often associated with domestic strangulation cases. A conviction could result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The affidavit obtained by TMZ Sports alleges that Beverley forcefully grabbed his sister by the neck, lifted her off the ground, slammed her into the walls and punched her once in the eye. Police investigators wrote that they observed visible marks on the woman’s neck and petechiae — burst blood vessels in the eyes commonly linked to choking or oxygen restriction. The alleged incident reportedly began after she left home without permission.

Attorney Disputes Details, Says Affidavit Is ‘Incomplete’

In a statement provided to Heavy Sports, Beverley’s attorney, Houston-based defense lawyer Letitia Quinones-Hollins, called the affidavit incomplete and argued that emotions at the time may have influenced how the situation was described to police.

“I understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story — given at a time when emotions were high,” Quinones-Hollins said.
“We don’t believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete.”

Quinones-Hollins also rejected the claim that Beverley acted violently.

“Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night,” she said. “In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities and encouraged others to do the same.”

The attorney further emphasized Beverley’s longstanding role within his family, describing him as a caretaker.

“He is the provider and protector of his family. He has always looked out for their well-being and will continue to do so.”

Beverley posted $40,000 bail and was released shortly after his arrest. No court date has been publicly announced.

Chicago Ties Highlight Public Interest

Interest in Beverley’s case has been particularly high in Chicago, where he has long been celebrated both for his NBA journey and for his return home. Before becoming one of the league’s most outspoken defenders, Beverley grew up in West Englewood and starred at Marshall High School.

He joined the Bulls in February 2023 and helped spark a late push into the NBA Play-In Tournament. Known for his defensive energy, he instantly connected with Chicago fans who admired his edge and hometown pride. Following his signing, Beverley famously told local reporters:

“I run through a wall for any team I play for. This is Chicago… I might pull something out I ain’t ever done before.”

During 22 games with the Bulls, he averaged 5.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while shooting 40% from three.

Case Remains Active

Beverley’s attorney has urged the public — including Bulls fans — to reserve judgment until additional evidence emerges.

“Please remember this is America,” Quinones-Hollins said. “Patrick is innocent unless proven otherwise in a court of law. When all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges.”

The legal process continues in Texas, where prosecutors have not released additional filings beyond the initial affidavit.
