India Cricket T20 World Cup Semifinal Opponent: Date & Game Time Set

March 1, 2026 by Heavy

India’s cricket team advanced to the semifinal of the T20 World Cup with a win over West Indies, falling just one win short of a return to the final and a chance to defend their 2024 title.

It was not the easiest path for India, who sailed through the group stage before suffering a major setback in a loss to South Africa. That left India in need of two wins against Zimbabwe and West Indies, but the team delivered and earned a trip back to the T20 World Cup semifinal.

India Learns Semifinal Opponent After T20 World Cup Quarterfinal Win

With India’s win over West Indies on Sunday, their semifinal game time is set. They will face off in their next match on Thursday, March 5, at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

As MyKhel noted, India’s semifinal opponent in the T20 World Cup is still up in the air. If South Africa loses to Zimbabwe, India can still finish as the Group 1 winner — if their NRR tops South Africa’s.

“In that case, they would face New Zealand in the semifinal,” the report noted. “But realistically, an India win may still be enough to finish 2nd in the group and in that case, they are set to play England in the semifinal, which would be a repeat of the 2022 T20 World Cup.”

So while odds are favoring a rematch with England, India cricket fans will need to keep watching the scoreboard to find out exactly who they will play in the T20 World Cup semifinal.

The T20 World Cup 2026 final is scheduled for March 8 and will take place in Ahmedabad.

India Didn’t Take West Indies Lightly

India went into Sunday’s match against West Indies needing a big performance, and earned a warning from cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. Despite a resounding victory against Zimbabwe, Gavaskar warned that India could not take West Indies lightly.

“West Indies is a completely different challenge. They cannot be taken for granted,” Gavaskar told Star Sports, via MyKhel. “Their batters are in top form. Their bowlers are doing well. They punish opposition mistakes and strike at the right time.”

Gavaskar said it would all come down to India’s bowling, noting that West Indies are aggressive in their batting. India’s team chose to bowl first against West Indies, holding them to 195 runs.

India will need a good plan to handle the West Indies batting threat,” Gavaskar said. “Their batters start playing shots from ball one. They do not wait to see if the delivery needs respect. Their way of respecting the ball is by hitting it over the ropes. So India will have to play smart, come up with plans, and outfox West Indies in a way they do not expect. Sunday’s match is surely going to be a cracking one.”
