The New York Mets missed the playoffs in 2025, and the moves they have made this offseason don’t inspire much hope. Moreover, the Mets allowed for Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz to walk in free agency while trading away Brandon Nimmo.
New York have added Devin Williams, Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco, but the Mets haven’t made a big-time move or moves that can push them to be serious contenders in the National League.
With spring training nearing, former Mets general manager Jim Duquette shared a troubling outlook for New York if there are no other major moves on the horizon from the president of baseball operations, David Stearns.
“I don’t think they’re a postseason team yet,” Duquette said on the Jan. 8 edition of “Baseball Night in New York.” “Some of the metrics, wins above replacement, have them, I think, sixth best in the league right now. If you look at their starting rotation, it doesn’t add up to me. They’re lower than ranked in that area. I think if you look at center field, objectively, left field, DH, all well below, like under 1 WAR. If you’re into that as a metric, that’s a lot of positions.
“Atlanta is pretty good. They have some question marks. Philly is really good. The Marlins are better. The Nationals are going to be better just in their own division, never mind the Central and the West. I find it hard, but I have to really squint hard to think that they’re a postseason team as they’re constructed, but I know they [have] more moves.”
Mets Aren’t Convincing That They Are Playoff Contenders
Meanwhile, SNY’s John Harper also agreed that the Mets, as constructed, cannot be considered a serious postseason contender due to the many question marks surrounding the team.
“I don’t see it. I mean, in the service, at least, they’re worse offensively. Pitching-wise, we don’t know. I mean, it feels a little bit like a couple of years ago. If everything goes right, and everything did go right in ’24, basically, and the Glace showed up and everything else.
“If you get huge bouncebacks from [David] Peterson, [Sean] Manaea, [Kodai] Senga, and this kid, Carson Benge, turns out to be a stud, then yeah, okay, everything falls into place and you can do that. But that’s counting on an awful lot. That’s for sure.”
Would the Mets Consider an Out-of-the-Box Trade?
Nonetheless, in an SNY video posted on Jan. 7, Dan Graca of “Baseball Night in New York“ presented his out-of-the-box trade that New York could make to bolster the team, which is going after Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout.
“You’re not asking Trout to be a center fielder every single day like in his prime years, but he could be a legitimate DH, right-handed bat, for you,“ Graca added. “The Mets don’t have just true right-handed hitters that scare you. I mean, if you get Trout off his feet, why the heck not? He comes closer to home. He’s a South Jersey guy. Outside the box. Mike Trout to the Mets.”
