After another humiliating special teams mistake in the loss to the Chicago Bears, some Green Bay Packers fans are calling for coordinator Rich Bisaccia’s job.
The Bears recovered an onside kick that bounced off the hands of Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs inside the final two minutes of Week 16’s matchup, taking advantage of the rare recovery — an 8% chance of success — and marching downfield to tie the game.
Chicago then won the coin toss in overtime, opted to defer, stopped Green Bay on its only drive, and walked off with a 46-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DJ Moore.
While several mistakes contributed to the Packers’ collapse at Soldier Field, though, Packers fans seemed particularly miffed about yet another costly special teams error.
Here’s some of what the fans are saying:
“Packers legit might not make the playoffs because they employ Rich Bisaccia,” one fan wrote after December 20’s loss on X.
“Rich Bisaccia has been a known problem on specials for at least 2 years,” another fan insisted on X after the game. “Much like when they finally fired [Maurice] Mo Drayton [in 2022] way after the damage was done, history is gonna repeat itself, I’m afraid.”
“Starting the fire Rich Bisaccia agenda again,” a third fan wrote on X.
“Rich Bisaccia is employed to coordinate special teams … on purpose … at the highest rate in professional football,” wrote Ken Ingalls, a Packers salary-cap analyst.
Another analyst, Jason B. Hirschhorn of The Leap, also chimed in to question whether the Packers will “hold Rich Bisaccia accountable” for the costly mistake — as the Los Angeles Rams did last week when they fired Chase Blackburn after December 18’s loss.
Matt LaFleur Defends Rich Bisaccia & Special Teams
The Packers’ onside kick blunder against the Bears isn’t even the only special teams play that has contributed directly to them losing a game during the 2025 season.
In Week 3, the Packers had their go-ahead, 46-yard field goal try blocked in the final 30 seconds, which led to the Cleveland Browns marching downfield and winning the game. The following week, the Dallas Cowboys blocked one of their PATs and returned it for a two-point conversion, a consequential moment in a game that ended in a 40-40 draw.
The Packers also missed a decisive 43-yard field goal against the Carolina Panthers in Week 9’s three-point loss, all pivotal mistakes that fall under Bisaccia’s purview.
Even after the onside kick fail, though, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said that he feels his special teams unit has done a “pretty good job” throughout the 2025 season.
“I get it,” LaFleur said when asked about the costly special teams errors. “You’re looking at three plays that are killer plays, but I think if you look at the totality, I think our teams have done a pretty good job, especially when you look at our coverage units. I know we’re sound in what we do, and I think guys have been competing. It’s not like we’re giving up huge returns or things of that nature. It’s just unfortunate there’s been a couple of moments where it just puts a black cloud over whatever’s been done.”
Romeo Doubs Takes Blame for Mishandling Onside Kick
Bisaccia is the special teams coordinator and, as such, bears responsibility any time one of his units falls short of expectations or makes a costly mistake. That said, it is hard to blame the veteran coach too much for how the onside kick ultimately unfolded.
Let’s break down the situation: The Bears, in desperation mode, are kicking an onside kick that has a single-digit percentage of working out in their favor. To make it even harder on them, the Packers decide to trot out their surest-handed receiver in Doubs, who had caught five passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in the game up to that point.
The Bears kick the ball, Doubs gets hands on it, and then devastatingly mishandles it, leaving cornerback and special-teams ace Josh Blackwell to make the key recovery.
Hard to fault the 65-yard coach on the sideline for his best player not making the play, and even Doubs himself would agree that the blame falls squarely on his shoulders.
“S***, I missed it,” Doubs said in the postgame, via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman. “That’s just this game, bro. I rep this s*** all week, and yeah, bro, somebody gotta be responsible, and I’m willing to take 1,000% of it.”
