After the Miami Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier, the team brought in key personnel from the Green Bay Packers. Miami hired former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as its new head coach and former Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as its new general manager.
As a result, the Miami Dolphins have been linked this offseason with players who have experience with the Green Bay Packers. The primary former Packers player that has been garnering attention from the Dolphins has been quarterback Malik Willis, who is expected to be the top free agent quarterback available this offseason.
However, now, the Packers have re-signed a player that was originally a part of the Dolphins system.
Packers Re-Sign Former Miami Dolphins Running Back
Sports agency One West Sports Group announced that their client, running back Chris Brooks, signed a two-year, $4.85 million deal with the Green Bay Packers. Brooks signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2023 season, and after an impressive training camp and preseason, he made Miami’s 53-man roster.
With the Dolphins, Brooks was buried behind a running back unit that featured Raheem Mostert, who set a Miami franchise record with 21 touchdowns, and rookie De’Von Achane, who had an outstanding 7.8 yards per carry. Brooks finished the season with only 19 carries in nine games, totaling 106 yards on 5.6 yards per carry.
Brooks’ primary usage with Miami was on special teams as he totaled 105 special teams snaps to only 36 offensive snaps. Entering the 2024 season, the Dolphins drafted running back Jaylen Wright with the team’s third-round pick, which resulted in more competition at the position for Brooks. He was unable to earn a spot on the team’s final roster and was waived during the team’s final cuts. Brooks also suffered a concussion during training camp, which resulted in him missing a significant portion of the team’s training camp and being released with an injury settlement.
Chris Brooks With the Packers
After being released by the Dolphins, Brooks signed with the Packers’ practice squad the following day. Two weeks later, Brooks was elevated to the team’s active roster, a spot he has held for the past two seasons.
Regarding his role on the team, SB Nation writer Evan Western wrote, “Over the past two seasons, the Green Bay Packers have made Chris Brooks a key component of their offense and special teams units. The former Cal and BYU runner came to Green Bay early in the 2024 season and has played nearly every game since, serving largely as the team’s pass-protecting running back and an important member of punt and kickoff coverage and blocking units.
With three seasons under his belt, Brooks qualified as a restricted free agent this offseason, as did running mate Emanuel Wilson. However, while the Packers have reportedly chosen not to tender Wilson this spring, they have committed to Brooks for the next two years. According to his agents, One West Sports Group, Brooks has signed on with Green Bay for just under $5 million total over the 2026 and 2027 seasons.”
