While many of us spent Memorial Day not doing anything particularly arduous, Abby Lampe was in England to once again hurl herself with reckless abandon down a steep hill in an effort to defend her cheese rolling title.
Wearing a red NC State basketball shirt, she spoke beforehand about her preparation for taking on this challenge again.
She put together another excellent performance (you can see her in the lower left of the photo up top going heels over head) but wound up second after the young woman ahead of her found her footing at just the right time and raced home. Abby was a little dazed at the end there but was fine, if a little disappointed.
That’s understandable, as no great champion, regardless of the sport, has ever felt like second place could be worth celebrating. No doubt this will fuel the offseason ahead for her, and I expect she’ll be back better than ever next year.
