Might be a chaotic few days ahead.
As the last weekend of the baseball regular season approaches, there ain’t a whole lot that’s been settled. Ten teams have winning records in league play, and seven of them still have a shot at first place.
NC State is in second place, but while the first-place Seminoles have a series against UNC ahead, the Wolfpack gets 15th-place Stanford in Raleigh.
When you toss in that Georgia Tech and Duke will be squaring off, there’s a decided scheduling advantage for the Wolfpack here. If I’m mathing correctly, NC State already is assured a top-eight finish (and a single-bye in the ACCT) and going 2-1 this weekend would assure a top-four finish (and a double-bye). A sweep could very well push State into first place.
The final weekend schedule for the top 10 teams:
(4) UNC vs. (1) FSU
(15) Stanford vs. (2) NC State
(3) Georgia Tech vs. (5) Duke
(6) UVA vs. (12) VT
(7) Clemson vs. (14) Pitt
(11) Notre Dame vs. (8) Miami
(10) Wake Forest vs. (9) Louisville
Virginia and Clemson are set up to make a move but are on the road at least. We need Florida State to drop at least one against UNC, obviously, and no sweep by either team in Durham would be helpful as well. The fun starts on Thursday.
