NC State will (likely) have a new backstop next season
Alex Sosa entered the transfer portal, bringing the total number of 2025 Wolfpack players in the portal to 15. Five of those 15 are from the state of Florida.
Sosa played in 52 games in 2025 for NC State, starting all 52 of them, including 40 games at catcher. For the season he hit .291/.401/.534, 16 2B, 10 HR, 14.5 BB%, 21.9 K%, 0-0 SB. He is playing for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League this summer along with fellow 2025 Pack9 teammates Ty Head, Jacob Dudan, and Camden Wimbish.
Last summer, Sosa spent time with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. That followed a freshman year in which Sosa started 30 games among 35 total games played, hitting .230/.356/.398, 1 2B, 6 HR, 15.6 BB%, 25.2 K%, 1-1 SB. The numbers were not indicative of the lefty hitter’s true abilities as he missed a month of the season due to an illness. He started each of the Wolfpack’s postseason contests that year.
With Sosa’s entry into the portal and the previous entry of Drew Lanphere, the Wolfpack are down to a single returning catcher for 2026. That lone returnee is FR Preston Bonn who did not see any playing time in 2025. State does have one catcher in their incoming freshman class, Vincent DeCarlo, a high school teammate of 2025 Wolfpack RHP Aden Knowles (who is also in the transfer portal).
With one returnee (a redshirt freshman) and one incoming freshman, expect the Wolfpack to bring in a transfer catcher to compete for the starting job next year.
