RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Dave Doeren is starting his 13th season at the helm of NC State football, a stark contrast to the combined one complete season the current Duke and North Carolina head football coaches have in the Triangle.
That makes Doeren the second-longest tenured coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference, only behind Clemson’s Dabo Sweeney. In CBS 17’s college football kickoff show, our sports department examines Doeren’s long-term leadership of the Wolfpack.
Experience and program continuity like that seem especially crucial for a team that not only has a starting quarterback who was a true freshman last season, but also brought in two new coordinators this year. What could NC State’s offense and defense look like this year? Will the play of Wolfpack linebackers — traditionally a point of pride for the team — continue to be a strength this season?
NC State will be tested right out of the gate with a Thursday night rivalry game against East Carolina to open the season. Fans from both teams are expected to pack Carter-Finley Stadium and provide another noisy backdrop for the second consecutive matchup between the two programs.
