Former NC State quarterback Roman Gabriel passed away this Saturday morning. He was 83 years old.
Gabriel’s son confirmed his passing with a social media post.
“I am sad to announce my father Roman Gabriel @RGabriel4HOF passed away peacefully this morning of natural causes at his home,” his son wrote on social media. “The entire family asked for your prayers, and to please respect our privacy – I love you dad.”
Gabriel played for NC State from 1959-1961. His jersey number was retired, which makes sense considering he was a two-time ACC Player of the Year during his time with the Wolfpack.
What’s most impressive about Gabriel’s college career is that he set 22 school and nine ACC records at NC State.
In 1962, Gabriel started his pro career with the Los Angeles Rams. It wasn’t until 1973 when he joined the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gabriel was named the MVP of the NFL in 1969. He finished that season with over 2,500 passing yards and 24 touchdowns.
After dealing with injuries to his knee and shoulder in 1972, Gabriel bounced back and became the league’s Comeback Player of the Year.
Overall, Gabriel finished his NFL career with 29,444 passing yards and 201 touchdowns.
Our thoughts are with Gabriel’s family.
