RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — More than a week after a season-opening win against in-state rivals East Carolina, NC State football will finally take the field again against a fellow Atlantic Coast Conference team — but it won’t be a considered a conference matchup.
The Wolfpack (1-0) is set to face the Virginia Cavaliers (1-0) at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Kickoff is set for noon.
NC State’s season began on Aug. 28, a Thursday night on which they defeated the ECU Pirates 24-17. Quarterback CJ Bailey threw for 318 yards, completing 24 of his 34 pass attempts with one passing touchdown and one interception. He also ran into the endzone for a score, as did Hollywood Smothers, who led the ground game with 76 yards. Wesley Grimes led the Wolfpack receivers with 121 yards on just four catches and a touchdown.
The Cavaliers opened their season last Saturday with a 48-7 win at home over Coastal Carolina. Starting Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris completed 19 of his 27 pass attempts for 264 yards and two touchdowns. Cam Ross was his favorite target, with the receiver finishing with 124 yards on seven receptions with a touchdown.
It will be a short week for the Wolfpack as another Thursday game is on tap. NC State will make the quick trip to Winston-Salem for a Week 3 matchup against Wake Forest on Sept. 11.
