NC State baseball adds infielder Sherman Johnson

The former Arkansas commit started his career at Dallas Baptist

After losing their top incoming freshman infielder to the MLB Draft earlier this month, NC State was in the market for some reinforcements on the dirt. They accomplished that on Tuesday with the addition of JUCO transfer infielder Sherman Johnson. He will be a redshirt sophomore for the 2026 season.

From Loganville, GA, Johnson sat just outside of the Top 250 nationally in the class of 2023, starting his career at Dallas Baptist. He received just 3 plate appearances for the CUSA Tournament champion Patriots in 2024, leading to him heading to the JUCO ranks for the 2025 season. In helping lead McLennan CC to an appearance in the 2025 JUCO World Series, Johnson earned All JUCO World Series Team honors while also taking home the Defensive Player of the Tournament honors.

The 6’2, 185 lbs right-handed batting Johnson batted leadoff and played shortstop for McLennan, hitting .319/.425/.569, 21 2B, 9 HR, 13.4 BB%, 14.9 K%, 21-24 SB in 2025. He was committed to Arkansas but decommitted last week to open up his recruitment.

While he’s only played on the infield in college, Johnson has the athleticism and arm strength to also play in the outfield. He joins Mikey Ryan and Wyatt Peifer as position player transfers for the 2026 version of the Pack9.

Barring any players turning down signing with the MLB clubs who drafted them, the Wolfpack roster currently sits at 30 players. The remaining four spots are likely to target outfield and pitching depth.
