Former NC State quarterback Roman Gabriel passed away this Saturday at the age of 83. His son confirmed this heartbreaking news on social media.
“I am sad to announce my father Roman Gabriel @RGabriel4HOF passed away peacefully this morning of natural causes at his home,” Gabriel’s son wrote. “The entire family asked for your prayers, and to please respect our privacy – I love you dad.”
Gabriel had an incredible college career, setting 22 school and nine ACC records at NC State. Additionally, he was the first quarterback in ACC history to have over 1,000 passing yards in a season.
In 1989, Gabriel was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. His jersey number with the Wolfpack was eventually retired as well.
On Saturday afternoon, the school issued this statement: “NC State Athletics mourns the passing of former Wolfpack quarterback Roman Gabriel.”
NC State fans responded to this statement by sharing their fondest memories of Gabriel.
In addition to being an incredible quarterback at NC State, Gabriel was an elite playmaker in the NFL. In 1969, he was named MVP of the league for having over 2,500 passing yards and 24 touchdowns.
Our thoughts are with Gabriel’s family and friends at this time.
