RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – NC State had won 30 of its last 37 games at home going into Saturday night’s matchup with Virginia Tech, but the night did not go as planned for Dave Doeren’s group.
Virginia Tech kicker John Love connected on a 49-yard field goal attempt, and the Hokies defense shut down NC State over the final two series for a 23-21 stunner at Carter-Finley Stadium.
NC State (3-2) scored to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, driving 75 yards on 10 plays before Jayden Scott punched it in from a yard out to give the Wolfpack a 21-20 lead. Virginia Tech (2-3) responded with a nine-play drive that ended with Love’s long field goal.
The Wolfpack had a chance for another thrilling late victory, getting the ball back after a Hokies punt with 1:25 left in the game. But facing fourth and 1 from the 44 yard line, CJ Bailey could not connect with Justin Joly, and Virginia Tech’s sideline erupted.
Bailey finished with 240 yards through the air and two touchdowns, while Virginia Tech held Hollywood Smothers to 67 yards on the ground.
