Last night, Patrick Bailey came up a couple feet short of hitting a normal, boring, three-run walk-off outside-the-park home run. And what a relief that was, because instead he hit an incredible, awesome, three-run walk-off inside-the-park home run.
Bailey runs pretty well but still it’s wild to see somebody safe by that much when no human-related defensive shenanigans were involved. That baseball was perfectly placed on the warning track and fled the scene with great prejudice. Bailey nearly scores before the ball even gets back to the infield.
Clearly no one knew how to react to this development, as all anyone on the Giants could do was rip the man’s jersey off and immediately hit him with the Gatorade. This was the first walk-off inside-the-park homer hit by a catcher in 99 years, so I suppose it’s understandable nobody knew what to do with themselves. It’s like baseball’s Halley’s Comet.
