First Summer Session
All signed players are expected to be on campus Wednesday to begin summer S&C and skills training, with the possible exception of Paul Mbiya. (TBD) Since he started playing organized ball only three years ago, he might have the most to gain so hopefully he’ll arrive soon.
Open Roster Positions
- Musa Sagnia is still in play for a roster spot. He is currently playing in the Euro league for BAXI Manresa. Their regular season ends May 30.
- PJ Haggerty is doing the NBA Combine this week. All indications are still that NC State is his preferred destination if he doesn’t stay in the NBA draft.
- Ven-Allen Lubin from UNC has been in conversations with the staff. Originally his intent was to test the transfer portal waters but likely return to UNC. Apparently that option is no longer open to him. Lubin finished the season strong at center.
NCAA Proposed Changes
The NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee met this week and submitted some proposals for consideration. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel must approve all rule proposals before they become official. They meet June 10.
- Recommendations include a coach’s challenge at any point in a game to review out-of-bounds calls, basket interference/goaltending and whether a secondary defender was in the restricted-area arc.
- Committee members also recommended modifications to the rule on continuous motion on field goal attempts.
- Officials would have the option to call a Flagrant 1 foul when a player is contacted to the groin. (Suggested name, “The Hodge Rule”) A Flagrant 1 foul results in two free throws for the offended team and possession of the ball.
- If a player uses the rim to gain an advantage, it would be a basket interference violation.
- If one of the shot clocks becomes inoperable, the shot clock at the other basket would be allowed to remain on. Currently, both clocks would be shut off until both are operable.
Converting to quarters under consideration – The committee recommends NCAA Division I conferences create a joint working group to provide feedback on the potential change from halves to quarters.
