Video: USF Receiver’s Bizarre 3rd Down Play Going Viral

September 3, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

A general view of NC State's football field.

Week 1 of the college football season officially got underway on Thursday night. And with it, one USF football player had a tough time shaking off the offseason rust.

The Bulls clashed with the NC State Wolfpack on Thursday night. Early on, South Florida faced a third down with 11 yards to pick up the first.

In the obvious passing play scenario, one of USF’s receivers ran a crossing route. Instead of running sideline-to-sideline though, he started running his route backwards.

To make matters worse, USF’s quarterback threw him the ball. The receiver caught it about five or six yards behind the line of scrimmage and was tackled for a major loss.

Take a look.

In my opinion this is a bad play for 3rd and 11. pic.twitter.com/j7cI5NruWa

That’s about as bad as it gets. We’re not sure what he was thinking.

It’s plausible the USF football receiver thought he was running sideline-to-sideline, but lost focus. It’s also plausible he directed his route as he did to try and gain more separation from nearby defenders. Regardless, it didn’t work and USF was forced to punt.

These are the kind of plays you typically see early on in the season. We might end up seeing more of them in this year in particular because of last year’s circumstances. Most teams didn’t play a normal season, getting less reps than normal in the process. It might take a few weeks before most teams get into a groove.

Tune into ACC Network right now to catch the rest of USF-NC State.
