CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — How will Bill Belichick and North Carolina football bounce back after being dominated by TCU on Monday?
That’s the question many people have as the Tar Heels (0-1) visit the Charlotte 49ers (0-1) Saturday night and try to avoid their first 0-2 start since the 2018 season. Kickoff at Jerry Richardson Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
UNC, in Belichick’s prime time college coaching debut, struggled mightily on both sides of the ball, only managing a total of 14 points to TCU’s 48. Starting quarterback Gio Lopez was pulled in the third quarter after completing just four of his 10 pass attempts for 69 yards. Max Johnson, last year’s starter, came in after that and threw for 103 yards on nine of 11 passes. As a whole, the team managed just 222 total yards on offense.
Charlotte enters the game off a 34-11 defeat to Appalachian State in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium on Aug. 29. The 49ers starting quarterback, former Tar Heel Conner Harrell, threw for 142 yards on 13 of 24 passing with one touchdown and one interception in the loss.
The Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill for their Week 3 matchup. They host the Richmond Spiders next Saturday afternoon.
