In 2017, A’ja Wilson helped lead the South Carolina Gamecocks to their first-ever NCAA Tournament title. Seven years later, on the heels of the Gamecocks winning their third title, Wilson returned to her old stomping grounds and got a hero’s welcome.

On Saturday, Wilson and the two-time defending WNBA Las Vegas Aces were at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina for an exhibition game against the Puerto Rico national team. The Aces easily dispatched the opposition, winning 102-50, but the real sight to see was after the game.

As Wilson came off the court she was greeted by a massive applause in the arena she once called home for four years. Wilson was visibly brought to tears as she did a victory lap around the venue.

Much love — Thanks for hosting us, @CLAmktg! ❤️@_ajawilson22 // #ALLINLV pic.twitter.com/pUJR8wP7w0

“Thank you! Thank you guys! Thank you guys!” Wilson said repeatedly.

After the game, many of Wilson’s friends and teammates took to social media to send heartfelt messages to her for that moment:

“That was truly one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever been able to be part of. The way SC showed/shows up for A. The love & admiration we have for her as teammates & coaches. A’ja transcends basketball. And we’re lucky she’s ours,” Aces assistant Tyler Marsh wrote.

“The environment in @CLAmktg today was SO dope!! Getting to see @_ajawilson22 celebrated in her hometown & getting to experience the FAMS was special! Thank ya’ll for coming out,” wrote Alysha Clark.

Wilson will always be a legend in South Carolina basketball.
