Charlotte Hornets’ Betting Night Promo Comes With an Ironic Twist

September 10, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Sometimes the NBA calendar delivers storylines you cannot script even if you tried. The NBA has several promotional nights that they try to market, but teams also have their own events.

Here is a gem that you might miss if you do not pay closer attention to the schedule. On March 17th, the Charlotte Hornets are hosting a sports betting night. They will play the Miami Heat on that day, and for now, Terry Rozier is still on the Heat roster. The former Hornets guard was once under an NBA league betting probe. He was later cleared, but the memory remains.

Charlotte Hornets’ Betting Night Promo Comes With an Ironic Twist

The Charlotte Hornets’ sports betting night will be presented by Bet365. For those who want to place bets, they allow fans to wager on opening night, playoff series, and even the All-Star Game. And just so it happens, on March 17, the Hornets will host Rozier and the Heat.

Rozier was part of a league betting probe in March 2023, when he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets. He was later traded to the Miami Heat, where he’s averaged 12.5 points over two seasons. The Heat have been actively trying to trade Rozier, but so far, with no results. He might still be on the roster when the two teams face off in March.

Terry Rozier’s Betting Scandal

The first report about Rozier’s betting scandal came in March 2023. He was later cleared by the NBA of any wrongdoing, but he remained under federal investigation.

According to that investigation, Rozier was the subject of 30 wagers by a bettor—all placed within a 46-minute span. Prior to the game between the Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans, one bettor received $13,759 in wagers. All 30 bets were on the under for Rozier’s points, rebounds, and assists. In that particular game, Rozier left the game after playing only 10 minutes, citing a foot injury. He finished the game with only five points, four rebounds, and two assists, all of which were under the betting line for his statistics. And all 30 of the bets won.

The NBA investigated the betting activity, but determined that no league rules were violated. His attorney confirmed he was cleared by the NBA and was no longer part of a federal investigation.

NBA’s Stance on Betting

The league has a very strict stance on betting. Prior to Rozier’s situation, the NBA banned former Raptors forward Jontay Porter for life. In August 2025, the NBA and the NBPA reached an agreement to make betting on individual stats even more restricted.

While the NBA allows betting, they try to protect the integrity of the game. In a statement, they said:

“We believe reasonable limitations on certain prop bets should be given due consideration. Any approach should aim to reduce the risk of performance manipulation while ensuring that fans who wish to place pro bets can continue to do so via legal, regulated markets.”

With the NBA being the most popular basketball league in the world, it is crucial to protect players from being manipulated by sports gambling.

This summer, Michael Porter Jr. made headlines for his statement on betting. After his younger brother Jontay was banned for life, MPJ discussed sports gambling on a podcast.

“Think about it, if you could get all your homies rich by telling them, ‘Yo, bet $10,000 on my under this one game. I’m going to act like I’ve got an injury, and I’m going to sit out. I’m going to come out after three minutes. And they all get a little bag because you did it in one game. That is so not OK. But some people probably think like that. They come from nothing, and all their homies have nothing.”

He also noted how betting might worsen in the future. Porter talked about how the proliferation of sports betting has detracted from the integrity and enjoyment, and that people are trying to find more ways to make money.
