At 13-24, the Hornets are 12th of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. The team has some exciting young players, but Charlotte cannot win consistently. They are coming off a 97-96 loss to the Raptors on Wednesday.

With the 22nd pick in the 2019 NBA draft, Grant Williams was selected by the Celtics out of Tennessee. Williams spent the first four and a half seasons of his career with Boston. He appeared in 288 games and made 58 starts. During the 2023 offseason, the Celtics were involved in a three-team deal that sent Grant Williams to the Mavericks. As part of that trade, Williams got a four-year, $53.3 million deal from Dallas. In return, Boston received multiple second-round picks.
Williams’ career with the Mavericks lasted just 47 games. At the 2023-24 deadline, Dallas traded Williams to the Hornets. That was part of a larger deal for the Mavs to acquire PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford. Over two seasons, Grant Williams has appeared in 45 games and made 17 starts for Charlotte. In late November 2024, Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. The former first-round pick has not played in over a year.

However, Grant Williams is on the precipice of making a return for the Hornets. He recently posted a clock that is counting down to Saturday, January 10. That is when Hornets fans can expect to see Williams back on the court. Charlotte is on the road Saturday evening to face the Utah Jazz. Grant Williams will take the court for the first time in well over a year. How effective will he be vs. the Jazz?
In 16 appearances and seven starts in 2024-25, Williams averaged 29.9 minutes per game for the Hornets. It was a small sample size last season, but Williams played a significant role for Charlotte. Will head coach Charles Lee play Williams in those types of minutes in 2025-26. The team is already 37 games into the year and has an established rotation. Where will Grant Williams fit in on Saturday? The Hornets have a deep rotation of players. Charles Lee will find a way to get Williams into the lineup in his first game back.
