Trade Grades: The Suns Solve Major Issues With Nurkic Trade

February 7, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Jusuf Nurkic has been traded by the Suns to the Hornets

The Phoenix Suns have finally moved on from Jusuf Nurkic. After months of speculation, they sent the veteran center to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Cody Martin, Vasilije Micić, and a 2026 second-round pick. The Nurkic trade not only addresses key roster concerns for the Suns but also provides crucial financial flexibility.

The Suns Solve Major Issues With Jusuf Nurkic Trade

Why the Suns Made This Move

Nurkic’s time in Phoenix had been turbulent. His role diminished under new head coach Mike Budenholzer, and his public comments about their lack of a relationship only made matters worse. With the Suns already acquiring Nick Richards, Nurkic’s departure became inevitable.

By trading him, Phoenix avoids paying the remaining two years of his four-year, $70 million contract. This move generates over $120 million in potential savings through 2026, giving the Suns more financial maneuverability. Additionally, by shedding Nurkic’s contract, they slip below the NBA’s restrictive second apron, opening up more options for future roster adjustments.

How This Trade Helps Phoenix

Phoenix’s biggest issue this season has been depth. The team’s reliance on Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal has left them exposed when injuries hit. Adding Martin and Micić gives them two capable rotational pieces.

Martin brings defensive versatility and playoff experience. He can guard multiple positions and provide energy off the bench. Meanwhile, Micić, a former EuroLeague MVP, gives Phoenix a steady hand at backup point guard—an area of need for much of the season.

The financial benefits are just as significant. Phoenix now has more flexibility to make moves in free agency or at the next trade deadline. With Martin and Micić on short-term deals, the Suns avoid long-term salary commitments, keeping their future options open.

What This Means for the Hornets

For Charlotte, the trade represents both a short-term solution and a long-term gamble. The Hornets needed a reliable center after trading Mark Williams to the Lakers. While Nurkic has struggled in Phoenix, he remains a capable big man who can rebound and provide interior presence.

Charlotte also benefits from acquiring a 2026 first-round pick. With the Suns’ future uncertain, this pick could become a valuable asset. If Phoenix declines in the coming years, Charlotte could end up with a high draft selection.

Financially, taking on Nurkic’s contract is not ideal. He will earn over $37 million through 2026, limiting Charlotte’s cap flexibility. However, if he plays well, the Hornets could flip him for additional assets before his deal expires.

Suns Grade: B

Phoenix executed this trade well. They gained depth, saved money, and set themselves up for future flexibility. While they gave up a first-round pick, they improved their roster for the present while keeping an eye on long-term financial health.

Hornets Grade: B-

Charlotte addressed a positional need and added a valuable draft asset. Nurkic may not be a perfect fit, but the first-round pick makes the deal worthwhile. If he plays well, they can either keep him or move him for more assets.

The Suns Trade Jusuf Nurkic For Role Players and Flexibility

The Suns solved multiple problems with this trade. They improved their bench, gained financial flexibility, and moved on from a player who no longer fit their system. Meanwhile, Charlotte acquired a much-needed center and an intriguing draft asset. This deal helps both teams, but Phoenix’s financial relief could prove to be the most impactful long-term benefit.
