2025 NHL Lottery Results: Surprise at Number One

May 6, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The 2025 NHL Lottery has concluded. We know who will be picking first overall. It is not the San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks. It is not even the Pittsburgh Penguins. In a shocking turn of events, the New York Islanders have won the lottery and will draft first overall.

Who the Islanders will choose is unclear at this time. The consensus around the league is that defenceman Matthew Schaefer will go first overall, but there are other players who would be worthy of the first pick.

The Islanders victory in the lottery is an unexpected one. The Sharks, who picked first overall last year, had the best odds, but alas, the hockey gods were smiling on the Islanders. The Islanders were expected to draft tenth overall.

The NHL’s Future Stars

The 2025 NHL Entry Draft will be June 27th and 28th in Los Angeles. The future stars of the NHL will be selected. Teams will make trades to shake up their roster. It will be a celebration of the future of hockey and what awaits us down the road.

Expect the Unexpected

Considering we had two comebacks in a Game 7 this weekend followed by this crazy lottery, perhaps it is a sign we should start to expect the unexpected.
