RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Just like Friday night’s game that eventually went into double overtime, the Carolina Hurricanes found themselves in a hole early in Game 5 to the New Jersey Devils.
The Devils scored three goals in the opening period Tuesday night at the Lenovo Center, with Dawson Mercer, Timo Meier and Stefan Noesen netting one each.
But the Canes came storming back, scoring three of their own to start the second period. Taylor Hall scored first, followed by Jackson Blake and then Andrei Svechnikov to tie the game within six minutes. The tie was short-lived, however, as Nico Hischier found the back of the net less than two minutes later to put the Devils back up 4-3. Sebastian Aho then scored on a power play with 11:27 left in the second to tie it up again at 4-4.
A scoreless third period and first overtime set up the second double overtime game in three contests.
The Canes didn’t have to wait long to get their game-winning and series-clinching goal. With 4:17 elapsed in the second extra period, Aho once again scored on a power play to send the Canes to the second round of the playoffs with a 5-4 win.
Carolina moves on to play the winner of the series between the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens. The Caps currently lead the series 3-1, with Game 5 set for Wednesday night.
